It's not a scam local police usually see, but in larger cities it's not unusual to find criminals generating checks with stolen bank account information.
Aiken Public Safety learned last week that a Seymour, Ind., bank account number was printed on at least two bogus Wachovia checks.
Investigators said the suspect used the checks locally at Wal-Mart, cashing at least two at the Whiskey Road superstore.
Each check was written for approximately $450.
Both times the suspect purchased a DVD recorder, which investigators said are easily sold on the black market.
A number of local retailers will typically run a check and then return it to the customer, which means investigators don't have a hard copy of the bogus check, but through their investigation learned how the funds were being stolen.
Detectives are trying to determine if the suspect used a doctored driver's license when cashing the checks.
Aiken police learned about the incident after Seymour police officers contacted them late last week about the money stolen from a small bank in Seymour.
Police said the account was not with Wachovia nor were the checks legitimate checks from the bank.
Police remind shoppers to be careful with their account information and protect their checking account numbers.
Aiken Public Safety is asking anyone with information about this crime is asked to call CrimeStoppers of the Midlands: (888) 559-TIPS (8477). Callers will remain anonymous and could receive a reward of between $50 and $1,000.
