"Something in your eyes was so inviting, something in your smile was so exciting, something in my heart, told me I must have you."
These words sung by Frank Sinatra now describe the newest stamp at the United States Post Office. Starting on Tuesday, Ol' Blue Eyes began arriving in mailboxes nationwide with his charismatic smile, trademark fedora and striking blue eyes.
According to USPS officials, 120 million Frank Sinatra 42-cent first-class stamps became available on May 13. Kelly Prescott of the Aiken Main Post Office located on Laurens Street confirmed the stamps' arrival and said people are requesting them.
Special celebrations held in New York City, Las Vegas and Hoboken, N.J., commemorated Sinatra's achievements and launched the new stamps.
"Today, the Postal Service is proud to deliver its own special tribute to the 'Chairman of the Board," said Postal Service Board of Governors Chairman Alan Kessler during the celebration at New York City's Gotham Hall. "On Frank's 80th birthday, the City of New York turned the Empire State Building blue. Starting today, we're going to try to do New York City one better - by turning America's mail a beautiful shade of blue. One hundred twenty million portraits of 'Ol' Blue Eyes' will carry our cards, letters and packages to their destinations all around the world."
The stamp, created by artist Kazuhiko Sano and art director Richard Sheaff, reflects an image of a 1950s photograph of Sinatra complete with his autograph.
The stamp is not all the USPS has to offer Sinatra fans. The Postal Store has made the following items available at select locations throughout the United States as well as online at www.usps.com/sinatra: musical greeting cards, "Ring-A-Ding-Ding" matted art and commemorative stamp cachet, a bubble mailer, CD mailer and digital color postmark keepsakes. Visitors may enter to win an entertainment system, plus Sinatra music, movies and memorabilia.
