Republicans are the problem
11/22/2009 12:30 AM
Now that President Obama and his administration have come up with tentative plans to close GITMO and move the detainees to a secure prison site in Illinois, the Republicans are doing what they typically do. They are resisting the plan without offering an alternative plan of their own. The Republican administration had six or seven years to resolve the detention issues for the GITMO detainees, but like an ostrich with its head in the sand, they procrastinated and passed that problem on to President Obama for him to solve. They don't have any alternatives to offer, but yet, they are comfortable obstructing his plans.

The Justice Department has announced plans to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others in a federal court in New York for their role in the 9/11 attacks. As could have been predicted, the Republicans are finding all types of nonsensical reasons why this is a bad idea. Despite the fact that many other terrorists have been tried and convicted in the federal court system, the Republicans are spreading fear as usual about all of the terrible things that may happen if this plan proceeds. I think their real motive is that they don't want the general public to hear any testimony on how the Bush administration tortured Mr. Mohammed and some of the other detainees.

There is an old saying that if "you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem." Clearly the Republicans are part of the problem. This conclusion is true for most of the domestic and international issues that this country is currently confronting.

Comment Title: confidence in our judicial system
The problem is not our judicial system. The problems are trying the terrorist in federal court in NY is an INSULT to the 9/11 victims and their family, it will cost the city of NY and the federal government 100 of millions of dollar they don’t have and will bring unnecessary danger to the city of NY. The main reason is not give these evil people an international platform to spread their propaganda. But this is not about justice for the terrorist it about vengeance on Bush.

Comment Title: Bush stated that the Gitmo "terrorists" trials should occur on US soil
I for one don’t care what Bush might have said. It is not his decision. Why all of sudden are you liberals worried about what “W” might have said. The terrorist are war criminals and should be treated as such.

Poor old Moses. He must not realize that Congress has a Democratic majority and need not wait on the Republicans for any legislation they choose to pass. As winter approaches I hope he keeps his lotion warm with his Obama poster above his bed.

In 2006 Bush stated that the Gitmo "terrorists" trials should occur on US soil and in NYC if possible. They said that it would prove our determination that we are a lawful country and NOT afraid of the terrorists. The idea that most normal thinking Americans will not check his prior statements is a joke. I guess they only care that they can con the 25% of the people who latch onto Fox and talk radio?

Comment Title: Teabagger & Rightwinged Constitution Shredders
The ruling by the Supreme Court was that Habeas corpus did apply to detainees in GTMO. Habeas corpus means they must be given a timely trial. That does not prevent them being tried in a military tribunal and it has nothing to do with where they are being held. OK so let’s do what the Supreme court ruled, give them a quick trial in a military tribunal. If found not guilty let them go, if found guilty shot them or put them in prison.
The real objective behind the civil trials in NY is to put Bush/Cheny on trial. As the writer of the ‘tea party’ comment did it is all about Bush bashing. The far left liberals will give the terrorist an international stage to bash America as long as they can bash “W”. They are letting their hatred of “W” cloud their vision.

Comment Title: To: Teabagger & Rightwinged Constitution Shredders
On June 12, 2008, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Boumediene v. "W" that the Guantanamo captives were entitled to the protection of the United States Constitution.
Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the majority, described the Military Tribunals as "an inadequate substitute for habeas corpus" although "both the DTA and the SCRT process remain intact.
1. US has signed & ratified Treaties on how to a) care for and b) give jurisprudence to people accused of being the "enemy."
2. The US Constitution mandates that we abide by all Treaties ratified.
3. "W" thought that if he called them the "enemy of W A R" they would be subject to military tribunal. He was WRONG according to the Supreme Court.
President Obama MUST follow the law - "W" shredded the Constitution and now the Teabaggers want President Obama to shred the Constitution and disobey the Supreme Court ruling.
hmmm ... and you Teabaggers chant about our Constitution and now YOU ALL want it shred.

Comment Title: Obama is the problem
Mr. Mims, you have come up with some naïve letters before but this is the worst yet. The answers to the problems are ALREADY in place! Why CLOSE GITMO! No one is forcing Obama to close it. How does moving the detainees from GITMO to Illinois solve the detention issues? All you are doing is moving them from a prison outside the US to one inside. The terrorist were going to be tried in a military court as they should be. Trying the terrorist in NY will cost the city and country 100s of millions of dollars. Al-Qaeda will be laughing at us. Obama has created these problems and you say the republicans don’t have solutions. Give me break! But I guess the republicans need to solve Obama’s problems he is better at making problems than he is at solving them. But that happens when you are not qualified for the job.

Comment Title: Not hardly!
I got a plan. He's pleaded guilty/confessed, execute him. I got another plan, leave them in GITMO. Face it, liberals are vindictive because they got whopped by GWB in 2 elections. But keep up the chant because the liberals are soon to receive the ultimate whoopin.
