Christian newspaper tubes are now available in Aiken 2/6/2009 12:02 AM
Scot Newcom holds an "I Believe" news tube. Newcom came up with the idea of putting Christian slogan on the tubes after a federal judge said South Carolina could no longer make or market "I Believe" license plate.
By JENNIFER MILLER Staff Writer
Scot Newcom got mad when a judge ruled he couldn't have a state license plate with the Christian slogan "I Believe."
So, he came up with his own unique way to proclaim his faith - newspaper tubes, those plastic tubes you see next to many mailboxes.
It helps that Newcom is the circulation director for the Aiken Standard and he's the one who orders tubes for the newspaper.
Instead of the traditional newspaper name on the side of the tube, these say "I Believe," and the "I" is in the shape of a nail.
"I believe Christians have the right to share their faith with others," said Newcom, who is very active in his church, Breezy Hill Baptist in Graniteville.
Anyone, newspaper subscribers or not, can purchase one of tubes for $12.99.
They even come in five colors - red, yellow, black, blue and green.
But, in this climate of declining circulation, why would a newspaper give up any opportunity to get its name in front of the public?
"Our name is out there. That's why we have been the fastest growing newspaper in South Carolina for the past several years. There are thousands of tubes out there that have our name on them," he said. "The beauty (of the news tubes) is it's really more of an advertising piece."
In the case of "I Believe," Newcom said he is giving people the opportunity to advertise their faith.
If he gets enough requests, he'll consider ordering other personalized news tubes. One popular slogan for Aiken might be "I love horses," he said.
Newcom doesn't know what the interest might be.
The tubes are available at the Aiken Standard at 326 Rutland Ave. They also can be ordered through www.shopaiken.net. Applicable sales tax and shipping and handling charges will be added.
The cost is $12.99 plus tax. It includes a bracket to install the tube.

Comment Title: To: Wind Bag
Making newspaper tubes to support a non-partisan, charity cause like Jerry's Kids or the Ronald McDonald house does not jeopardize a newspaper's credibility. As far as I know, no one is against cancer research or Jerry's Kids. Thus, if they come out in support of these worthy causes, it does not mean that their reporting of other news items may be biased. However, if they choose to support one religion - which the "I Believe" tubes do, then how can we trust that an accurate, unbiased story will be presented if the Standard has to report on a minority religion, like say Judaism? Or where will their bias lie if there is an article about Israel vs. Palestine? (Not that the Aiken Standard would ever do such a national article; they'd probably just buy one from the AP). If they allow their name to be put on "I Believe" tubes, do they also subscribe to other traditionally Christian agendas? Are they going to be unbiased if they have to report on a pro-life, pro-choice conflict? See how this trickles down? Now that I've answered this question, answer mine. Why is it important for the Aiken Standard to be the one making these tubes? Why can't you just buy your own plain tube & stick an "I Believe" bumper sticker on it? Or why not leave these kinds of messsage tubes to be created by private companies or religious organizations? Why is it appropriate for the Standard to do this? As far as being tolerant of other beliefs goes, is the Standard being tolerant of other beliefs by only offering one religious message? I think if they offered tubes that said "Praise Allah," "Blessed Be," and "Al-Salaam A'alaykum" as well, we'd have a much easier time accepting these.

Comment Title: Wind Bags
Once again it has been proven that those wind bags with much to say about nothing have no power in their threats, intimidations, name calling and other theatrics. They have proven my point all along. They are in tolerated of others beliefs and it is only their opinion that counts. Bruce, Deb and Aikenite you are well known for rants, threats and most importantly the comic relief that you bring to this type of forum. By the way, it has been over eight days and “I Believe” that the circulation director is still on the job. Bruce, Deb and Aikenite can’t even mustard enough air, let put this way, HOT AIR to blow up a balloon. So continue your comic stick routine. It has been enjoyable to watch and to see the true color of your hatred towards Christians. But your battle is not with Christians, it is with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. I notice that none of you have addressed the issue that if the Standard did one for cancer research, Jerry's Kids or the Ronald McDonald House, would you still the same type of hatred that you have shown in the "I Believe" tubes. Your silence about that subject speaks volumns about your true intent.

Obviously, I do comprehend that the Standard violated the Professional Journalists Code of Ethics. My post was calling attention to that very fact. I do have a rather expansive vocabulary, and if I am unsure of a word, I'm very capable of using a dictionary, so yes, I can handle "large" words. I think you did not read my post carefully. I'm simply asking those who "believe" that the Standard should create religious newspaper tubes why they feel that it is appropriate for them to do so. I don't think I was addressing you. Please read more carefully next time. As for Denis - thank you for the sermon. But I don't see how any of that has anything to do with the Aiken Standard's selling religious tubes. Again, it's not a community newspapers place to espouse religion. Leave that to the churches and other religious organizations. BTW - since you obviously know so much about God and the Bible, can you explain any of these stories to me? http://listverse.com/bizarre/top-10-bizarre-biblical-tales/ I have trouble believing in the Christian version of the truth just because of stories like these.

Comment Title: Willfully Stupid
From the earliest of universities to present, men have taken pride in their education. And a college education is an accomplishment. However, that accomplishment does not justify a feeling of superiority over other men. Willful stupidity cannot be cured with education, and often those who chose to be so inflicted will accuse those who have a different opinion as being ignorant and uneducated. Bruce, a frequent blogger to the Aiken Standard serves as a perfect example of someone who is willfully stupid, accusing those who profess to believe in God as being uneducated. Man, with all his wisdom and knowledge, cannot make one grain of sand from nothing, not even one atom of any element! Yet Bruce, and others like him, chose to believe that Earth and the Universe started as nothing, which became a ball that eventually exploded. Science, being a study based on observation, has NEVER observed life coming from non-life, yet again, Bruce, and the other willfully stupid chose to BELIEVE in macro-evolution. The motivation behind such willful stupidity is a recognition that if God did create the world and all therein, then God has the right to make the rules for man to live by (and He did). Bruce's BELIEF will not make the TRUE God less of a reality, nor will it provide him an escape from the judgment of hell, God promises to those who do not repent and accept Jesus as Savior. Bruce should get one of those new "I BELIEVE" newspaper tubes and add to his "In Stupid Things." Those of us who know God, are thankful for His love, that God would love man so much as to allow his only begotten son to die for our sins. While it would be nice if Bruce would repent, and accept Jesus, rarely are the willfully stupid smart enough to chose Eternal Life over Eternal Damnation.

No one has answered my question yet. I really do want a rational, non-emotional response on this one- Why is it important to have the Aiken Standard create this newspaper box? Why can't you just put an "I Believe" sticker on it yourself? Why does the state need to make a religious license plate? Why not just put religious slogans on your car?

Comment Title: I'll Type Slower So's You Can Understand
Wow, Wes. If "No Code of Ethics governs the content of this newspaper" I'm not sure I want to be reading it! Sounds like Fox News to me. Just FYI - this is straight from the Society of Professional Journalists website regarding a newspaper's ethics: — Examine their own cultural values and avoid imposing those values on others. —Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived. — Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility. — Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage. Of course, they can choose not to abide by these ethics if they want, but professional newspapers follow these standards or set their own very similar standards. I'd be curious to see if the Aiken Standard has its own Code of Ethics. If the Aiken Standard wants to espouse a Christian viewpoint, then by all means they should. However, they should also change their flag to indicate this. Maybe they could put "We Believe" or "Aiken's Christian Paper" in the flag. Then, they should let another unbiased, objective newspaper become our community's paper. And Deb, you assume incorrectly when you assume that the ones against the tubes are atheists or agnostics. What my belief is is none of your business, frankly. I don't think anyone is saying that people don't have a right to have religious slogans on their property or persons. We are just saying that it shouldn't be state sponsored or advocated by an organization that is supposed to be unbiased and objective.

Wow ???? !!!!! I just finished reading all of these comments and am somewhat perplexed ???? First of all, the Aiken Standard is a private enterprise. As a news organisation, they show their credibility by reporting the news objectively and without bias. However, like any other private organisation, they can choose to market and sell whatever they desire. It is their choice. I think their marketing strategy of piggy backing on the failed license plates is a very good one. I wish them success. I fail to understand the outrage that Bruce and some others have exhibited toward this endeavor. Rather than having an intelligent debate, it seems that this issue has degenerated into a nasty brawl. As an outsider, I hope their diminished mental capacity is not a representation of the majority of the residents of Aiken. I would think not. Regards, Angus

For some time now, I have been thinking about buying a tube to protect my morning paper from the elements. Now that the "I Believe" tubes are out, I will be make sure to get one. Why? While I don't feel that those of us who are Christians should feel obliged to purchase the "I Believe" tube, the blatant attacks, from Bruce and the like, have actually convinced myself and numerous others to do so. When I first saw the article I just took it in stride and had no intention of buying one. It wasn't until others elevated the issue that I decided to act on purchasing one. The Standard is only hurting their credibility by crossing the barrier of ethics and promoting only one religion and they will probably pay a steep price for this choice..Not financially but by losing credibility . Judging by the emails i have recieved so far this is going to spiral out of control quickly. And i will do whatever it takes to have other faiths represented ... I DON'T CARE OR PERSONALLY WOULDN'T MIND, IF YOU GET A "HAIL SATAN" TUBE. IT DOESN'T BOTHER ME WHO BELIEVES IN WHAT. IF YOU WISH TO EXPRESS YOURSELF WITH WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN.....THEN DO IT. FORTUNATELY, ALL OF US HAVE THAT RIGHT! Comment Title: To Aikenite
I am all for freedom of expression. I have no problem with people who want to plaster their cars with bumper stickers, or wear t-shirts expressing their beliefs. If someone wants to make a 40 foot Jesus on a cross and put it in their front yard - more power to them. What I'm saying it I don't think it's the place of a public newspaper to espouse any one viewpoint. Doing this seriously puts their credibility and objectivity into doubt - two things that are paramount to a newspaper's operation. If someone wants to have "I Believe" on their newspaper box, why can't they just buy one of those bumper stickers and put it on? Why not just plaster the back of your car with "I Love Jesus" stickers? Why do you have to have it on your license plate, too? Here's why I think it's so important to you - by the organizations putting this message on these things, it implies that they support whatever message is there. You then feel justified in your belief because you have the Aiken Standard or the Department of Motor Vehicles backing you up. How weak is your belief that you need to have these organizations to support you? It's also not the place of a government organization or a community newspaper to do this. As for your support of freedom of expression - it's rather suspect. After all, you told Lagarita Nick to go make his own "Hail Satan" mailbox. Shouldn't you be telling the same thing to Christians? If you allow one side to express it's belief, you should allow the same courtesy to the other (if you're really a fan of freedom of expression - which I doubt). And BTW - I didn't mean you when I said there were some "mentally stunted local yokels," but if you feel compelled to step up and claim the label, it's all yours.

I have no idea what all these people are griping about as far as everyone being intolerant of Christians. Have you people looked around you? I've never lived in a place so rigidly Christian with no tolerance for other religions. Schools around here hold Christmas celebrations with no regard for any other religions. In fact, last week I can tell you North Augusta High School had a pro-life speaker talking to their freshman students. Do you think they're going to bring in a pro-choice speaker next? Hah! If your belief is so weak that you feel you must proclaim it on a newspaper box, I'm very sorry for you. I thought Christ said to share your beliefs by your good works. I guess it's easier to just buy a newspaper box. Regardless, one of the main journalistic tenets requires one to be impartial and non-biased. Hosting "I believe" mailboxes hardly creates that impression. Not that the Aiken Standard is a real newspaper by any means. I've seen far better journalism in high school papers. It's sad, really. And, you go, Bruce. It's entertaining watching these mentally stunted local yokels try to match wits with you.

We are giving poor Bruce too much credit. Anyone who does not hold his beliefs, if any, he has to attack. The true color of the those who preach tolerance are the most intolerance of all. They use threats, abusive language and any threating tricks and yet people like Bruce and some of the other are exposed for what they really are. I have alway found it funny that those that preach tolerance are not tolerant of others with different veiw points. I think that is pretty funny. So keep up the intolerance that you preach that Christians should have. I am nothing more than a sinner saved by Grace.

Wow the emails i have recieved ... I have quite a few people interested in sueing the Standard for not only ethics violations but discrimination. Those nice lawyers in D.C assure me this will be a great battle. Isn't the internet nice? I can accomplish so much in one day... First we sue to get rid of the plates, now we can sue the Standard ....

I don't remember anyone showing anything down your throat or asking you to change anything. You have the the right to believe in the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus, but what gives you the right to tell others what they believe in is wrong. Not just you Bruce, but the others that have shown their true intolerance to Christian beliefs. Your battle is with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. You have shown your true colors.

Well Eddie there isn't and besides if the truth hurts you that much then don't read it.. Kind of like my choice of rejecting your notion of religion. It is just like a christian to want anything that goes against your twisted belief system to be banned.... Burn any good books lately you neocon nazi?

"I believe" HE is working. It seems to have placed a "visible" fear in some. Bruce, in spite of your babbling God still loves you. His love is unconditional. You are every preachers dream, ya'll keep them working. Displaying the words I believe is not cramming anything down anybody's throat. And I don't think you'll get to first base with your alleged complaint. The tubes will not have Aiken Standard on them. Besides it's called freedom of expression and WE KNOW that has already been challenged in the Supreme Court. So go get yourself a tube and insert the word "don't" if that's the way you feel. I don't care as I'm sure no body else cares if you BELIEVE OR NOT! I'll bet you that you use God's name more than you want to admit and if you use it in ANY way at all you acknowledge HIM and HIS existence. So think about that the next time you swear.

People amaze me. The more I'm around them, the more I love my dog. Charlie, my lab/chow mix, has two neighbor friends. Meka is a yorkie mix and Rufus is a Saint Benard Mix. So here you have Big, Medium, and Small running around and playing with each other. They don't care about their size or how different they look. They just enjoy each other and have a good time. Let's just love, respect, and enjoy one another as God intended. Hey, my dog and his two neighbors are able to do it. Peace !!! Alfred

There should be a age limit on letting people put comments on this page. It seem that Bruce has a lot of growing up to do. Maybe he is just intolerate of others who don't agree with his own twisted views.

I cannot "believe" some of the comments that have been posted about the "I Believe" newspaper tubes. Talk about some far fetch logic. The tubes only indicate that "I Believe" with the "I" as a nail. Christianity is attacked on every side. You can call yourself anything you want, you can be anything you want. But telling people that you not only believe, but worship Jesus Christ and you are willing to identify yourself and acknowledge Him as your personal Savior. I choose to "Believe". Our nation was built on the fundamentals of the Christian faith. Yet, Christians are denied their right to worship or mention their faith in Jesus Christ. I am willing to take a stand. I am buying a "I Believe" tube and will proudly display it in my yard. Nobody is forcing you to purchase one.

Comment Title: Sad but True.....
There are people that are against people sharing their faith with others, yet it is some of those same people that want to legalize such things as abortion. There are a few things you need to realize: First, Christians dont cram our faith down your throat. We read Gods Word and share it with others. We plant a seed and let God finish the work. It's kind of like gardening, when you plant the seed you water, feed, maintain the soil etc. After that is done, you are pretty much done. It is the same way with us sharing our faith. Just as you can't stand there and make a sprout come from a seed, neither can we make you Believe in God, if you choose not to. God didnt call christians to be stones, He called us to "Share the good news with others." I don't understand why you would get upset just because people say "I Believe", its really no different that you saying "I Believe that Clemson is better than Carolina." But once again, just as Jesus wasn't always understood when He walked on the earth, Christians aren't always understood either. It is our job as Christians to pray for those that don't know Christ and when given the opportunity, share not only His Word but His Love also. God Bless Everyone!! Be Encouraged!!

Comment Title: What's Next?
Mr. Newcom, you said: "I believe Christians have the right to share their faith with others." Well, then everyone has that right, don't they? I mean, surely it's not exclusive to Christians, is it? So why are you at a loss as to what slogan might be next? "I love horses?" No, no, no. Follow your own train of thought. Next, produce tubes with slogans or symbols representing other faiths--Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, and yes, Muslim. Then what about those people who aren't religious? They have a right to express that too, don't they? So how about "I Don't Believe" for the atheists? But don't stop there. How about tubes with swastikas, or pentagrams? You wouldn't deny the people who want those symbols their right to express their beliefs, would you, Mr. Newcom? Because if you do, you're no different than that judge you're so angry at. Or maybe, and I'm just spitballing here, you can stick to circulating newspapers and leave people's faiths and beliefs to them instead of trying to cram yours down everyone else's throats.

Posted by: Words of Christ in red On: 2/5/2009 Comment Title: Hypocrites Matthew 6:5-7 -- And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do; for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Great post! It does God's kingdom little good to make such boastful statements. I'm pretty sure that having "I Believe" on your paper tube will serve to push more people away from Jesus rather than draw them to Him. We should be GRATEFUL for our faith, rather than proud. God's word has very little good to say about "pride".
