For many reasons Aiken is one of the most charming little towns in the south.
Its uniqueness must be protected by its citizens and government. Horses, dogs and the people who love them are an important part of Aiken's history, present and future.
The recent DHEC decision to attempt enforce an ordinance banning all animals, including birds and turtles, from the sidewalk tables downtown is ridiculous.
If they are able to somehow kill off all of the adorable little birds that often share my toast crumbs at my regular table on the sidewalk in front of The New Moon Cafe, then they should begin to worry about my dogs.
Those that advocate the enforcement of this ordinance should offer some scientific evidence or proof of the good it will do. What illness specifically are we trying to avoid? It is quite common in England for dogs to be sleeping under the tables inside pubs and restaurants. Humans have had pets, or companion animals in our homes for thousands of years. What malady are we going to suffer from if we continue to allow animals on the sidewalks of Aiken, just as we have been doing for as long as all of us can remember.
If people want to live in a sterilized environment they should feel free to move to a condo in downtown Atlanta with enclosed, above the street sidewalks, indoor restaurants and gymnasiums.
