Senators prepare hard questions for Public Safety nominee

COLUMBIA (AP) -- The governor's nominee to lead the Department of Public Safety will face questioning from senators later this month about how he plans to restore public trust in the agency.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Glenn McConnell directed his committee's staff to prepare questions for veteran law enforcement officer Mark Keel. Confirmation hearings are likely to begin May 19 and last two days.
Gov. Mark Sanford nominated Keel last month to head the agency that oversees the troubled Highway Patrol. Public Safety Director James Schweitzer and Highway Patrol Colonel Russell Roark resigned earlier this year after videos began to surface that showed trooper misconduct, including a trooper using a racial slur and threatening a fleeing suspect.
Keel was formerly chief of staff and interim chief of the State Law Enforcement Division.
