WADMALAW ISLAND (AP) -- The Charleston County Sheriff's Office closed a portion of Maybank Highway to public traffic because of damage to trees and power lines from a possible tornado.
The nearly 4-mile stretch of road on this island south of the city of Charleston is open to emergency traffic, Charleston County spokeswoman Jennie Davis said Sunday evening.
Emergency Preparedness Division officials reported minor damage to about six homes. No injuries were reported and no one requested assistance from the American Red Cross, Davis said.
Much of the state was under severe weather warnings for much of Sunday as storms moved across the northern and southern parts of the state.
About 6,800 customers in the Upstate were without power, according to Duke Energy's Web site and South Carolina Electric and Gas reported more than 12,000 outages, but most of those were in the Midlands where storms passed through early Sunday morning.
Those storms stranded a dozen boaters and campers in the Lowcountry.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that the Berkeley County Rescue Squad and state Department of Natural Resources officials rescued six people from Raccoon Island in Lake Moultrie around 4:30 a.m. Sunday after their boat engine failed.
They also rescued a couple who rode out the storms in a boat on the Santee River for about 24 hours. Four people stranded on Capers Island and a man suffering from dehydration in a boat along the Ashley River were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
