The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a
North Augusta man, who Wednesday night robbed a New Ellenton convenience
store and then led police on a two-state pursuit.
Matthew L. Johnson, 30, 14 Georgetown Court, North Augusta, South
Carolina, is charged with Armed Robbery.
At 11:55 p.m., the subject walked into the Hot Spot, 831 South Main
Street, New Ellenton, South Carolina. He demanded money from an
employee. When she did not respond quickly enough to his demand, the
subject pulled out a knife. Johnson then removed an amount of money from
the cash register. He sped away in a maroon, Chrysler Concorde on
Highway 278 toward Beech Island.
A New Ellenton police officer spotted and pursued the subject into Beech
Island. An ACSO deputy joined the pursuit. Johnson drove into Augusta,
and followed Broad Street to Fifth Street to the Palmetto Parkway. The
Burnettown Police Department joined the pursuit on Palmetto Parkway.
Johnson drove back into Georgia and then followed Sand Bar Ferry Road
again into South Carolina. The subject drove along Highway 125 to Old
Nail Road. He finally lost control of his car and crashed into a tree at
the intersection of Old Nail Road and Old Jackson Highway.
Deputies arrested the injured man, who was transported to the Medical
College of Georgia, in Augusta.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
