Investigators have identified a woman caught on surveillance video earlier this month cashing stolen checks in North Augusta and say she has a history of similar behavior, according to officials.
Regina L. Padgett, 39, faces two counts of forgery and two counts of bank fraud, said Aiken County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Michael Frank.
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office, in cooperation with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, say the woman earlier this month cashed a stolen check at one bank and tried unsuccessfully to cash a second one at another bank in North Augusta.
Frank said he doesn't know where the woman has been living but added that Richmond County Sheriff's Office investigators have been investigating her for similar crimes.
"She does have a history of this, but how extensive that is, I don't know," Frank said.
Padgett is described as a white female, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and 270 pounds. She has brown hair and green eyes.
On May 6, surveillance photographs show a woman matching Padgett's description cashing a forged check for $1,311 at Bank of America at 315 Edgefield Road in North Augusta.
On the same day, the woman tried to cash another stolen check for more than $500 at Security Federal Bank, Frank said.
The altered checks were among several stolen a day earlier from mailboxes outside homes on Maplewood Drive in North Augusta.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of this individual is asked to contact Investigator Charles Cain at the Aiken County Sheriff's Office at (800) 922-9709. Individuals also should call CrimeStoppers of the Midlands at (888) 559-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of between $50 and $1,000.
