Sorority to host Rockaway Revue

The Aiken Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority will host an appearance of the Rockaway Revue Inc. at Cedar Creek Church on Friday at 7 p.m.
The sorority is observing May as Senior Citizens Month and sponsoring the musical program as a tribute to seniors throughout the CSRA, said Rosemary English, the sorority's community chair.
Cedar Creek Church is located at 3001 Banks Mill Road in Aiken. Admission is $10 a person. The Rockaway Revue is a group of singing and dancing senior citizens from Jamaica, N.Y.
"This group comes every year after Mother's Day," English said. "When we first brought them here, we found that young people enjoyed them as much as seniors do."
The theme for this year's show is "I'll Take You There." Other selections include "The Impossible Dream," "Lady in Red," "New York, New York" "Ribbons in the Sky," "That's What Friends Are For" and the intriguing "I'm Bringing Sexy Back."
The Rockaway Revue dates back to the earlier 1970s, with the first Southern tour occurring in 1977. The group has about 40 members, ranging in age from 60 to 88.
Delta Sigma Theta was founded at Howard University in 1913 for college-trained women. The Aiken chapter is active in community involvement and cultural enlightenment, English said.
The chapter also provides scholarships for high school seniors. Those awards will be announced at schools' awards day programs later this month.
