ACSO investigates domestic shooting
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is investigating why an Aiken man shot his girlfriend in the hip overnight when she walked into the couple's bedroom at 1489 University Parkway.
The victim is identified as Shernell A. Martin, 24, of University Parkway.
The subject is identified as Algeron D. Isaac, 25, of the same address.
About 2:30 a.m., the man shot the victim with a .45 caliber handgun in the right hip when she walked into the bedroom, said Lt. Michael Frank, a spokesperson for the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
"Right now, we're trying to figure out whether this was an intentional or accidental shooting," said Sheriff Michael Hunt. "Mr. Isaac was intoxicated, so we're getting conflicting information."
According to the deputy's incident report, the man said the 24-year-old woman was armed with a knife and had attempted to stab him.
Aiken County Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to the Medical College of Georgia. She was treated and released.
No arrests have been made, Frank said.
Contest focus is violence prevention
A statewide logo contest will give students an opportunity to think about preventing gun violence in their schools.
The logo contest, "Preventing Gun Violence at Your School," is open to any student enrolled in elementary, middle or high school in South Carolina. The contest is an initiative of Project Sentry, a Department of Justice program designed to protect children from gun violence.
The U.S. attorney's office is sponsoring the project for the fifth year in a row. Entries will be divided into four grade categories. A winner will be selected from each of the four grade categories and an overall winner will be chosen from among the four grade category winners. The overall winner will receive a $200 U.S. Savings Bond and the three additional winners will each receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.
The deadline for submission is Monday, April 7. Contest information has been sent to schools throughout the state.
