A North Augusta man charged with a holdup at a New Ellenton convenience store was hospitalized after he fled into Georgia, back to South Carolina and then crashed his car into a tree at the intersection of Old Nail Road and Old Jackson Highway, according to officials.
Matthew L. Johnson, 30, of Georgetown Court in North Augusta, is charged with one count of armed robbery but is under investigation for another.
Around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, a man walked into the Hot Spot, 831 South Main St. in New Ellenton, and demanded money from an employee, said Lt. Michael Frank, a spokesman for the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
When the clerk did not respond quickly enough for him, he pulled out a knife, Frank said.
He then removed money from the cash register and sped away in a maroon Chrysler Concorde on Highway 278 toward Beech Island, Frank said.
A New Ellenton police officer spotted the vehicle and pursued the Concorde into Beech Island. An Aiken County Sheriff's Office deputy joined the chase.
The Concorde continued into Augusta and followed Broad Street to Fifth Street to the Palmetto Parkway, Frank said. The Burnettown Police Department joined the pursuit on Palmetto Parkway.
Johnson then drove back into Georgia and then followed Sand Bar Ferry Road again into South Carolina. The subject drove along Highway 125 to Old Nail Road, where he crashed.
Deputies arrested the injured man, who was transported to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, officials said.
