A plan aimed at revitalizing the Graniteville area and the entire Savannah River Basin will be unveiled on March 28.
In 2007, a Columbia-based consultancy firm, Genesis Consulting Group, was employed by Aiken and Edgefield Counties Economic Development Partnership. Its task was to create a rebound strategy for a 10-county area along the Savannah River Basin badly affected by multiple textile facility closings.
After months of planning and searching for citizens' input, the plan is now set to be made public at the official unveiling at the Etherredge Center lobby at USC Aiken.
State and local officials have been tight-lipped on what is contained in the plan; some have not even been able to view it yet.
"The primary goal of this recovery plan project is to determine the exact influence and impact on the region of the textile industry and its related industries," a spokesman for the consultants said.
The plan has been developed over the last several months. During that time, Genesis has tried to "identify traditional and non-traditional strategies for the region to best sustain and improve opportunities for its workforce, expand the tax base and improve the general welfare of the region," the spokesman said.
The research has included many stockholder interviews, group studies and a steering committee.
This project represents one of the largest economic development and industry studies undertaken in South Carolina to help improve the economic health of local communities, according to Genesis.
Funding for the study will come from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Agency, Aiken County government and the South Carolina Power Team, an alliance of 20 nonprofit electric cooperatives.
