A short but strong field of six horses in Saturday's stakes race the Southern Bank & Trust Imperial Cup will be among the highlights at the 42nd Renewal of the Aiken Spring Steeplechase at Ford Conger Field at the Aiken Horse Park.
The entries for the Southern Bank & Imperial Cup include Brigadoon Stable's Gliding (NZ) and EMO Stable's Orison, Polaris Stable's Preemptive Strike, John Griggs' Hip Hop, Bear Creek Stable's Sound Blaster (IRE) and Dapple Stable's Gryffindor.
Sanna Hendriks, who was the National Steeplechase Association's leading trainer in 2005 by number of wins and who was the leading trainer in money won in 2006 ($655,532), conditions Polaris Stable's Preemptive Strike, a 10-year-old gelded son of Roanoke, who finished third in the inaugural running of the Lonesome Glory Hurdle last Sept. 22 at Belmont Park. The chestnut gelding has won more than $300,000 and won the 2004 Carolina Cup while in the barn of Paul Rowland. Jody Petty will be in the irons Saturday on Preemptive Strike.
"It's going to be a tough race even though it's a small field; the two horses (Gliding and Orison) that Doug Fout trains are pretty tough," said Hendriks, in a phone interview on Wednesday afternoon. "Hip Hop will be tough. He's coming off a win at Little Everglades against lesser company. If Preemptive Strike runs his race, he should be there."
Hendriks' sister will send out a pair of runners on Saturday; Katherine McKenna will start Maneef (AUS), a bay gelding, in the day's fourth race - the Budweiser Cup, an allowance race with a field of 7 horses. Carl Rafter has the riding assignment on the 7-year-old.
"Maneef's from Australia. He's owned by a great supporter of the sport, Calvin Houghland," said McKenna, in a phone interview on Wednesday afternoon. "He has a big heart. He's a bay horse who ran at Little Everglades and won. I'm looking forward to having him run in Aiken."
Wild Journey, a 6-year-old son of Wild Rush, will be among the five entries in the sixth race, the Ford D. Conger.
"Wild Journey is owned by Hamilton Farm and used to be owned by Gill Johnston," said McKenna. "He's been at our farm this winter. He's a real doll baby and a barn favorite."
The W.C. Jackson, a one-and-a-quarter-mile Training Flat Race, drew a field of 10 starters. The second race, the James W. Maloney, a two-and-a-quarter-mile race over National Fences, will have nine starters; and the third race, the G.H. Bostwick, a two-and-a-quarter-mile race over national fences, will feature a field of 12 starters.
Tickets to the Guarantor Tent Party near the finish line are $100 each and $50 for children age 6 through 12.
A buffet luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will feature an open bar and live musical entertainment.
Vehicles higher than 12 feet are not permitted in a railside space.
There will be overflow parking in two areas for Saturday's Steeplechase races. The Aiken Polo Club in conjunction with the USC Aiken men's soccer team is offering alternative parking at the Powderhouse Fields for $15 per car starting at 9:30 a.m. The money is payable at the gate or at the office at the USC Aiken Convocation Center.
There will also be parking in front of the Aiken Training Track office for $10 per car starting at 11 a.m.
Subscriber tickets are $15, and general admission tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Children 6 or younger are admitted free.
Tickets are available at Aiken Drug, Aiken Saddlery, Aiken Ship, Floyd & Green, Ingate Professional Pharmacy, Lominick Pharmacy, Plum Pudding, Southern Bank & Trust, Stoplight Deli, Unique Expressions and the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce.
