Fresh-from-the-coast seafood will soon be available in Aiken.
Father-and-son team John and Chris Hyder are closing in on the final stages of putting the finishing touches on JC's Seafood, a seafood market, on Whiskey Road. The Hyders already own Hole-N-One, and JC's Seafood will open on the same property.
Billed as "The Crabbiest Place in Town," JC's Seafood will offer Maryland blue crab, clams, shrimp, oysters, mussels, scallops and more. Customers will be able to purchase them raw, boiled or steamed.
Or if customers wish to go a step further, Chris will be happy to throw their selections into a Lowcountry Boil mix. After about 15 minutes, people will be able to go home with a ready-made, hot dinner.
"We love seafood," John said. "There is not really a market where you can get 'fresh' seafood in Aiken. We've got several contacts on the South Carolina and Georgia coastlines."
The Hyders will be making a weekly trip to the coast to pick up the fresh crab, shrimp and shellfish for JC's Seafood. John said prices will be competitive with today's market.
The owners got their inspiration for the market because they wanted the coastal seafood but did not want to drive to the coast to get it. Plus, Chris said, they know a place in Daytona, Fla., that serves a delicious Lowcountry Boil. The recipe they will use for the boil -- with the addition of a secret ingredient -- is based on that one.
"We said, 'Aiken needs a place like this,'" Chris said. "And we started looking into it. And here we are."
John believes there is a large enough customer base in Aiken to support the market.
"Enough people go to Edisto, Tybee and love their seafood," he said.
Though JC's Seafood will be mainly Chris's show, John said he will be there for his son if he needs guidance or direction.
The Hyders estimate the market will be open in about two weeks. It is located at 3189 Whiskey Road.
