Son sentenced to 25 years for neglecting ill father
SPARTANBURG (AP) -- A 28-year-old Spartanburg man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after admitting he neglected his father, who had been debilitated by a series of strokes.
Prosecutors tell the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg that Phillip Mitchell pleaded guilty to neglect Tuesday shortly before his trial was scheduled to start.
Authorities say Phillip Sullivan had bed sores, lost 30 pounds and was dehydrated in the months before police found his naked body on a coach in the home he shared with his son in July 2007.
Prosecutors say Mitchell took his father out of a nursing home three months before he died and started cashing his Social Security checks.
Mitchell will have to serve more than 21 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
