Plant worker sentenced for taking kickbacks
COLUMBIA (AP) -- An armored vehicle plant worker in South Carolina has been sentenced to a year in federal prison for taking more than $100,000 in kickbacks from a subcontractor.
U.S. Attorney Walt Wilkins says 49-year-old Michael Timothy Carter was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in January. The former project manager at Force Protection Industries in Ladson faced as much as 10 years in prison, but his plea agreement called for a lesser sentence if he cooperated with prosecutors.
Prosecutors say Carter sought cash from Charlotte, Mich.-based subcontractor Spartan Chassis Inc. Spartan provided wheels and frames for bomb-resistant military vehicles used by U.S. troops in Iraq.
The prosecutors also say Carter steered business to Spartan and received $1,500 for each chassis.
