NORTH MYRTLE BEACH (AP) -- A banner plane crashed in the ocean just off North Myrtle Beach on Thursday. A city official said there were no serious injuries.

City spokeswomen Nicolle Aiello said the pilot was the only one onboard. He freed himself and got to shore -- about 35 feet away -- on his own. Aiello said the pilot said he planned to get himself to a hospital.

About 200 yards of the beach were closed as officials checked for fuel spills from the plane, which could be seen upside down in the water.

Aiello said the beach would reopen Friday for the July Fourth weekend.
