Union changes contract rules after mayor charged
7/23/2008 1:53 AM

UNION -- Union City Council is changing the way the city approves payments for contractors after the mayor and zoning administrator were charged in a public corruption scheme.

Interim Mayor Harold Thompson told the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg the city will allow an additional elected officeholder and appointed official to approve checks if they wish to provide more accountability.

Thompson also says city elections are too close to put anyone on the ballot for mayor, so the new leader will be decided with write-in votes.

Prosecutors say former Mayor Bruce Morgan and Building and Zoning Director Jeff Lawson accepted kickbacks in return for doling out government contracts. Morgan resigned and Lawson is on administrative leave without pay.
