Arizona St. defeats S.Carolina-Upstate
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Jamelle McMillan scored the final five points to clinch Arizona State's 61-52 victory over South Carolina-Upstate on Wednesday, but it did not leave him in a celebratory mood.
"We took care of business in the worst possible way," said McMillan, who had 15 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
"It was a lot closer than we expected, and we planned. Within ourselves, we have higher standards and expectations of each other. But we got the win. That's the most important thing."
McMillan's 3-pointer with 1:30 remaining gave Arizona State (10-3) a 59-52 edge, and his two free throws with 25.4 seconds remaining closed the scoring to give the Sun Devils their fourth straight victory.
Ty Abbott had a season-high 15 points, and Taylor Rohde had a career-high 12 points while playing 25 minutes after starting center Eric Boateng got into early foul trouble.
Arizona State had runs of 23-3 in the first half and 19-3 in the second half but could not put away the Spartans (1-10).
Abbott had eight points and Rohde six during the 19-3 run for a 49-32 advantage, and Derek Glasser hit a leaning 3-pointer with one second remaining on the shot clock to give Arizona State a 56-47 lead.
Sharon Minus hit a 3-pointer for South Carolina-Upstate with 2:12 remaining to cut it to 56-52, but that was as close as the Spartans got.
Carter Cook had 13 points to lead South Carolina-Upstate, which shot 39.1 percent from the field. Arizona State has limited nine opponents to fewer than 40 percent shooting from the field this season.
Minus and Ryan LeGates had eight points apiece for the Spartans. Cook made three 3-pointers, and Minus and LeGates had two apiece.
