Another lopsided region win for Williston-Elko Blue Devils
The Williston-Elko Blue Devils rolled to another lopsided win, blowing out the hapless Wagener-Salley War Eagles, 68-0. The Blue Devils sit atop Region IV-A and are 9-0 for the season. The loss dropped Wagener-Salley to 0-9.
With a region title all but wrapped up, and a playoff run to look ahead to, the Blue Devils kept superstars Dexter Staley and Marcus Bates on the bench in the first quarter. Kendric Salley and Tamyn "Gator" Garrick shouldered the load, and Williston-Elko was up 16-0 after one sluggish quarter of play.
Staley and Bates entered the game on defense at the beginning of the second, with Wagener-Salley in Blue Devils territory. Staley's presence was felt immediately, sacking the quarterback twice and forcing a fumble that was recovered by the War Eagles. On Williston-Elko's next offensive possession, Staley accounted for 57 yards on two plays, including a 24-yard touchdown run to make it 24-0. From there, the rout was on. Salley and Garrick tacked on touchdown runs, and a touchdown pass from Garrick to Staley capped the scoring for the first half at 46-0.
The Blue Devils racked up 268 yards of offense in the first half while holding the War Eagles to -5.
Even with a running clock in the second half, the Blue Devils were able to rack up yards (431) and points. A Demonte Graham touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter put the Blue Devils up 68-0, and Garrick took a knee rather than attempt the two-point conversion.
Wagener-Salley recorded 75 yards of offense, 63 of which came from the legs of Trevian Davis.
Kendric Salley carried the ball 11 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Staley racked up 164 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. Ondrew Bellinger rushed for two touchdowns and recorded eight tackles on the other side of the ball. Shamel Harley had an outstanding night, combining for 13 tackles.
Looking ahead to the finale at Blackville-Hilda next week, Williston-Elko coach Dwayne Garrick said, "Regardless of whether I want it to be a competitive game or not, it will be one. I know it will be a dogfight down there. Anytime it's Blackville and Williston, it's a pretty competitive game."
The War Eagles close out their season at North next week.
