Police search for man fleeing arrest

Police said they will continue to search for an unidentified suspect who fled arrest Thursday during a traffic stop in the area of Grace Avenue and Two Notch Road.

Aiken Public Safety attempted to stop the man who was riding a moped, but the driver, instead, crashed his moped and escaped police custody, said Lt. David Turno, a spokesperson for Aiken Public Safety.

The lieutenant said the man had dropped a stolen gun, and for that reason police elevated their search efforts to include the the Aiken Bloodhound Tracking Team.

The search through the neighborhood prompted calls from residents, Turno said. He, in turn, issued a press release to keep the residents there informed of what police knew of the search, he said.

Police had asked residents to take precautions and stay inside and call 911 if they saw anything suspicious.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Aiken Public Safety at 642-7620.
