Ex-church secretary charged with theft
10/29/2008 12:13 AM

By KAREN DAILY
Staff writer

A former New Ellenton church secretary and the wife of a Blackville minister said "only part of the allegations are true" that she used church credit cards to buy clothes, jewelry and vacations totaling more than $75,000.

Michelle S. Mitchum, 41, of Solomon Platt Avenue in Blackville, is charged with grand larceny, more than $5,000.

Investigators with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office say the former Grace Covenant Church of God secretary established two credit card accounts in the church's name and used them to pay household bills and purchase clothing, jewelry and vacations from January 2006 until September 2008.

But Mitchum denies some of those claims.

She said she did not open the credit card accounts for her personal use and added that the total amount stolen does not amount to anywhere near $75,000.

According to the investigator's affidavit, she charged $76,976.57 to the cards, but on Sept. 8, during an interview with investigators, she would only admit to taking $22,883.

Mitchum said she is sorry for what she did and added that she never avoided the authorities after they contacted her about the accusations. She said she fully cooperated with investigators.

"I am repentant," she said. "The Lord knows what I am responsible for."

She surrendered to the authorities Monday and was let out on bond.

"There are two sides to every story," she said but would not go into details.

The pastor of Grace Covenant Church of God approached investigators in March with the accusations.

Mitchum was the church secretary and an office manager in charge of the book keeping.

She would not give specifics about what she spent money on, saying those details will come out in court.

She is the wife of the pastor at the Blackville Church of God.

Comment Title: TO GRANDMA DET:
The more you write, the more seriouly ill I think you are mentally...you really do need our prayers! PLEASE PRAY FOR GRANDMA DET, as she jumps from subject to subject from someone being a thief that stole from a church to Barak Obama ( maybe shes BIPOLAR) Thank you!

Praise be to God. Save the souls of all the Aiken Standard readers. Lord, we know you've forgiven this woman for her moment of weakness. We know you will comfort Jennifer Hudson in her time of need. And we know you've sent us Barak Obama to make a positive change in this beautiful country of ours. Amen.

First of all, I'm not a "son", I have grown children of my own, and if you think we're talking "down" to you, then there you go putting up your defences again. And HOW DARE YOU JUDGE us, when you're the one preaching forgiveness. How dare you talk down to us, who do you 'think' YOU ARE??? Again, I say you think you're always right, and no one else can have an opinion, but yourself. I'm not out to hurt anyone, I'm just calling it as I see it and that includes your idiotic statements!! Don't forget to pray for Grandma Det! Thank you!

Don't talk down to me, son. I've been around a long time. You people are all just out to lynch someone who's done wrong. Let the law handle it. Don't worry, you're safe in your home. Your life will go on, while this woman will be rightly punished. You act like you never sinned before. From Grandma Det. Thank you. On this pagan holiday.

Comment Title: To JUSTICE:
Just to let you know, I'M the one who sent the message TO GRANDMA DET about "you just don't get it". She didn't write it. I agree with you......all she does is babble on & on, then gets on the defensive and starts saying "WE need professional help", "and how could it personally affect us", and that "we'll move on when something else happens..whether it be the headlines or something in our family". It doesn't matter what we say, Grandma Det is set in her ways and has a completely closed mind....she thinks she's the only one right and everyone else is wrong. She couldn't be more wrong in both cases!

This lady knew what she was doing. She knows right from wrong. She was stealing money to live beyond her means. She preyed on people that she knew would be forgiving. If I were a member of the church, I'd forgive her, but I'd still want justice. She did the crime, now she has to do the time! Like I said before, she probably is a nice person-but she admitted to stealing the money...we don't have to judge her, she's already let us know that she's GUILTY. She needs to go to jail just like the other lady that stole money from her boss. These people trust them to handle their money...they need to realize that money is always tempting...keep your eyes open.

Comment Title: Wrong AGAIN Granny Det
"For the LOVE of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." And, by the way, we get it. We get that you're a nutcase, a vampire, and a poor bible scholar. And, since you seem so eager to defend this church thief and downplay the seriousness of her crime, it make us wonder if you are on the receiving end of some money. The truth will out. And Justice will always find you.

Comment Title: CHURCH
WHEN YOU HEAR THE DEVIL LIVES IN THE HOUSE OF GOD IT IS TRUE. THE BEST PLACE TO DO EVIL IS IN THE CHURCH. ALL YOU HAVE DO DO IS SAY YOUR SORRY AND ITS FORGIVEN AND YOU ARE FREE TO DO IT AGAIN. THE POINT SHOULD BE GOD GAVE US 10 COMMANDMENTS NOT 10 GUIDELINES...SHE WILL BE JUDGED IN THE END BUT THERE ARE LAWS OF MAN THAT NEED TO BE FOLLOWED AS WELL.WILL JUSTICE BE SERVED? PROBABLY NOT

Please...you can't make me believe that her pastor husband didn't know what was going on...she was buying too much for him not to know.

Comment Title: RE: Where is the Pastor?
Maybe the pastor was involved and he paid back his part of the money taken by him, but Michelle couldn't pay her part back and then the Church turned her in. But the paper says the pastor turned her in...does anyone want to tell?

To all those who may have gave given monetary contributions to the church, are you no longer able to pay your bills because this woman stole from the church? Are you suffering personally and financially? How does this really affect you? This woman stole from the house of the Lord, and the Lord has forgiven her. Why can't you? This woman will be punished and that should be enough. Don't act like the poor vicitim. You'll forget about this as soon as the headlines change, or something happens in your family that makes you move on. This woman won't forget what she did, and she will pay the consequences. Thank you. And please pray for Jennifer Hudson. Thank you.

Ew, must hit a nerve!! No one was hurt?? No, not physically, they weren't. "You people who claim to be suffering as well, need professional help" You mean you have no compassion for "we people who are suffering"?? Something unfair about that, me thinks, not to mention that we didn't steal to solve our "sufferings" but you do have compassion for a known thief?? Get real!!! Best be checking in the mirror for the one who needs a therapist.

I feel for the members of Grace Covenant. This is a very unfortunate situation for them. I attended the church for a short time. I'm also very familiar with how the Church of God leadership works. If the former pastor was somehow involved in this fraud (not saying that he was) this poor woman might be thrown under the bus just to protect her own husband who is a Church of God pastor. Hopefully, it will come out in her trial.

Comment Title: 75,000 Hurts
Grandma Det you can't be serious. This church family was hurt. If someone stole 75,000 dollars from you would it hurt your family?

Posted by: Grandma Det On: 10/29/2008

Comment Title:
Isn't money the root of all evil? This woman will be punished. Isn't that enough? You people who claim to be suffering as well need professional help and need to ask the Lord to forgive you. No one was hurt. There was no violence. We need to move on as a community. It's only MONEY. Thank you. And please pray for Jennifer Hudson.

I want you on my side should I make a mistake stealing. I'll pray for you that noone ever steals from you. Or maybe I should pray they DO steal from you, without physically hurting you, and lets REALLY see how quickly you are to forgive them and "move on".

I went to this church for years. I left due to doctoral differences with the pastor himself. He was removed by the state office and nobody in the church was told why. Was he in cahoots with Michelle? Was the immoral reason something else hidden in shadows with Michelle? Why won't they tell?

The Lord has forgiven, and we have too. Let's move on. Pray for Jennifer Hudson.

Comment Title: re: where's the pastor
according to what i've heard the "former" pastor and his wife are very dear friends of Michelle and her husband. They all four worked together at another church. He insisted on hiring her when he moved to the aiken area. If Michelle says she took only $20,000 maybe the former pastor took the rest and it begs the question why would she take the rap for him. Perhaps someone should be asking the Chuch State office why the former pastor was removed. Ditto skullhammer!

Comment Title: Speaking Truth to Power
Frankly I'm a bit frightened (but, unfortunately, not surprised) at the number of people who want to write this off as a "God puts us in situations to test us" or "Everyone sins" sort of thing. This is precisely why charlatans, swindlers, and thieves like Michelle here love churches (particularly the ones that are poorly run and lack strong central leadership): because they know they can get away with murder and everyone will sit back and talk about how God is doing this or God is planning that. They also know that they can seduce everyone in the "flock" (a fitting term, by the way, because of its connection to sheep) into not asking too many questions (like good little sheep). Part of being a church member is holding others accountable--especially those in power (pastors, secretaries, deacons)--for everything they do, asking tough and often uncomfortable questions, getting your hands dirty when you need to, and so forth. (What in some political discourses is called "speaking truth to power.") I'm frankly disgusted by the number of people on this site who want to sweep this under the rug in order not to lose that cozy little feeling in the pit of their stomachs. Here's a final parting shot for all the "judge not lest ye be judged" mamby-pambies out there: folks, it's as equally dangerous to talk about what God is going to do and attribute His divine will to whatever little human situation you want to put a rose-colored spin on as it is to judge others.

Comment Title:
If I'm ever "put" into a situation to where I do something wrong that goes against the word in the bible, and the laws of the land I want all of you as my jurors, because you all seem to make excuses for someone who knowly and admittedly did something wrong. There is no excuse for stealing!! I don't care if it's a penny...if it's not yours, DON"T TAKE IT!!!! Of course you feel bad for the choices they make, but they still have to face jugdement day here on earth and to God.

Comment Title: Response to Alex & all
I am sure there has been something in all of our lives we regret doing. We are after all human. This too shall pass- Alex, that comment was not necessary. If all you have to say are things to tear down other people so you feel better about yourself, perhaps your comments shoud remain to yourself. Judge not- least you be judged.

Comment Title: Grace Covenant
I am part of this situation. The money I gave was for God, I was just giving it back to him. All I have belongs to him. Maybe, God is trying to teach the church something. Maybe he is trying to bring the congregation closer. Who knows what He has in store for all involved. Maybe, there was to much concern around the money of the church- instead of just praising Him. Let this be a lesson to us all.

Michelle and Walt my prayers are with you!! Just know that love covers a multitude of sin. I'm sure there is more to this story than what's being published. This is a storm and it will pass. It is not up to us to judge, just to restore and love. That's what being a Christian is about!!

Yes, what she did was wrong, and she will have to ask forgiveness, but....."let those of you without sin cast the first stone". Something to think about.

We don't know why she stole the money, but she did say that she did take some of that money. She's obviously guilty, wether or not she's a good person--which I'm sure she is, she just had a bad thought and ran with it....but she should of NEVER stolen from the house of God!!!

Comment Title: There are two sides.
I know this woman personally and there has to be another side to this story. I was saved under the preaching of this womans husband and I have spent considerable personal time with her. Give her the benefit of the doubt and please do not judge. She is a very good person. Stress can make a person do alot under tough circumstances.

Was the Pastor at the Grace Covenant Church of God involved, if not, why did the Pastor have to be relieved of his position?
