At the invitation of Rep. Skipper Perry, Aiken Artist Guild member Brenda Douglas will be exhibiting a sampling of her oils, acrylics and photography.

The exhibit, coordinated by George Kierspe and running now through May 27, is located in the Aiken County delegates office in the Blatt Building at the South Carolina State House in Columbia.

Douglas began pursuing an avid interest in photography in the mid '70s. Her first darkroom consisted of a color-head and trays in a closet under the stairwell in her home and carrying water from the guest bathroom for the processing. She studied under Ginny Southworth at USC Aiken and Billy Tullis at Aiken Technical College.

Upon retiring from her state court reporter position in fall 2004, Douglas began furthering her painting skills instilled in high school by art instructors Peggy Lambert and Marilyn Brown. She studied acrylics under Sharon Taylor Padgett and oils under Dorothy Johnson at the Aiken Center for the Arts. She reproduces some of her favorite photographs into paintings.

Douglas has exhibited both her photography and paintings locally and statewide. Her intentions are to capture the beauty of unusual people and places.

Though only semi-retired, Douglas finds time to be an active member of the Aiken Artist Guild, the Aiken Center for the Arts and the Aiken County Camera Club, as well as being an active member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church.

Douglas has two daughters, a son, five grandchildren and a supportive husband who shares her love of art and photography and does most of her framing.

She said her plans are to continue to learn all she can as fast as she can.
