1 man held, others questioned in SC deputy death

SMOAKS (AP) -- Investigators remained tightlipped Thursday as they questioned several people in the shooting death of a Colleton County deputy.

No one has been charged in the death of Dennis Compton, who was killed early Wednesday as he responded to a burglar alarm at an empty house.

A man considered a person of interest in the shooting was taken into custody in neighboring Dorchester County, Sheriff Ray Nash told news outlets. But Nash did not identify the man or say whether he faces charges. Officials with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office did not return several phone calls Thursday from The Associated Press.

Colleton County Sheriff George Malone told The Post and Courier of Charleston two other people have been brought in for questioning. He did not return repeated phone calls and a Colleton County sheriff's official reached by the AP refused to give any details about the case Thursday.

The State Law Enforcement Division, which assists local law enforcement agencies, knows of no charges in Compton's death, spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.

Officers are "following everything possible," said Timmons, who did not know how many people have been questioned in the case.

The son of the owner of the home where the alarm went off found Compton wounded outside after checking on the house and used the officer's radio to call for help.

The home is nestled among woods and farmland a few miles from Smoaks, a town of fewer than 150 people off Interstate 95 about 70 miles northwest of Charleston.

Compton, 39, was married with two children and two stepchildren. Visitation will be Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Parker Rhoden Funeral Home in Walterboro with the funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday at Walterboro's First Baptist Church.
