I love my child enough(and so do many others) to make sure that she gets the education that she should, and that is not going to happen if she spends less time in the classroom, and more time at home. And since my taxes and others peoples taxes fund public schools then it should be how we want it. It doesn't make any of us any less loving parents to think that these early dismissals and missed days completely ridiculous.

What sorry parents you are. It seems that you want to use the schools for day care.
Pathetic Parents : 11/4/2009
Seems like you don't love your kids very much if you'd like them to be gone so long. You want longer school? Chose the private school route. Can't afford it? Take a loan out. It's your child's future for crying out loud. I don't think you're helping them by whining on a small town message board. Lots of talk, no action. NO ACTION

I'm for year round school as well... or if they must they could possibly keep kids in school until 4:00 or 4:30 every day to make up for being dismissed early or when they don't go in at all.
Agree with year around school : 11/4/2009
This parent is exactly correct. The total number of days the children are out of school is around 28 days (close to a month). Then, with the 2hr. early dismissal, adds another 16 hrs of lost class time. Why is it that they need 3 days off at Thanksgiving (used to be only 2), 2 wks off at Christmas (most parents that work, don't take that much vacation at that time), Memorial Day(used to not get that day off from school, to close to the end of school), and spring break (come on these aren't college children), then they get a whole summer off to just complain of boredom after 2wks. because most of the summer camps are so expensive noone can afford them and not have a way for their child to get there. Why can't there be school all year round. I think that MV prep has that, maybe someone needs to see how it is working ou.

Professional Development : 11/4/2009
Added professional development days are mandated by the state. Ask most teacher and they will tell you they would rather be teaching.
Awful School System!!! : 11/4/2009
Our children spend more time out of school then they do in school. What is "professional development activities"? The teachers didn't do enough of professional development when they were in college getting their teaching degree. I am a parent that is for year round school. If you do your research you will find that a large number of school that operate year round has a much higher graduation rate, a higher rate of students enrolling into a 4-year college, and a much lower drop-out rate. It's time for us as parent to stand up and be an advocate for our child's education. If not our children will be left behind holding a empty basket.
