The 2009 STAR Riding Inc. Oyster Roast and Barbecue was held Friday evening at Black Forest Equestrian Center. The event is a fundraiser for the not-for-profit organization that has been improving the quality of life of people with disabilities in the CSRA.

Ray Wright has volunteered at STAR since relocating to Aiken eight years ago. His wife organized the evening's silent auction.

"We work with the children and the horses," said Wright. "For the last two or three years, we've worked with adult riders. It's a lot of fun to work with the adult and young adult riders. We believe in the program."

The specialized therapeutic and recreational riding organization is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association affiliate. The program provides a safe riding environment for students who participate and improves the strength, mobility, balance, coordination and communication skills of those individuals who take part while building their confidence and self-esteem.

STAR Riding Inc. is seeking additional volunteers, said Program Coordinator Kerri Creamer. The program has also helped students improve their social skills and foster an appreciation and respect for the horses and other people.

"We've had a really good turnout, and we're very pleased," said Creamer. "We're grateful to Ivan and Kathy Lewis for hosting us. It's such a lovely facility. They've been very generous."

The response and support from the community was very gratifying, said Alan Cohen, STAR Riding Inc. board member.

"Every year the event has grown," said Cohen. "STAR is a super program, and I can't say enough about it."
