An area radio station hoped it made a difference Thursday when it donated boxes of school supplies to Brothers and Sisters of Aiken County.
Program coordinator Charonica Pope said it did.
WAAW Radio 94.7 FM and Wal-Mart collaborated on the effort and delivered boxes of crayons, glue, pencils, pens, spiral notebooks and more to Brothers and Sisters. The radio station wanted to show by example that community participation can make a difference in a child's life and helped the media outlet live up to its slogan, "Making a Difference in the Community."
"Our goal is to give back to the community as much as we can," said Station Manager Ruben L. Freeman. "We thought of the positive things Brothers and Sisters is doing in the community, especially with the after-school program. We encourage all media outlets to get involved. There is a lot of room for growth and enrichment."
Pope said the donation will mean the world to the children in Brothers and Sisters.
"For us it's a blessing to the organization; it's a blessing to the students," she said. "It will be a great benefit to the parents. It will relieve some of the burden on the parents (of buying back to school supplies). We try to keep going and provide for our youth."
WAAW Radio 94.7 FM offers a variety of music, ministry and talk. Brothers and Sisters is a United Way agency that promotes positive youth development through recreation, tutoring and educational programs for children ages 5-18.
