After months of construction, Books-A-Million will open its doors in a few weeks.

Michael Draper, assistant general manager of the new bookstore, said Books-A-Million will officially open on Aug. 21. Workers are now just finishing up the final touches to the bookstore, which is practically complete.

Books-A-Million will be located in the rear of the Aiken Mall, next to Sears.

Although the store will be opening in a couple of weeks, Draper said a grand opening won't be held until Sept. 5 and 6. Representatives with the bookstore held a job fair at the Aiken OneStop on Richland Avenue Tuesday, seeking potential employees to help operate the store, which is just about 12,000 square feet in size.

Draper said the store will include a Joe Muggs Cafe, which will offer gourmet coffees, teas, desserts and other specialty drinks. The new store will also include an extensive magazine selection, which Draper said is one of the features that sets Books-A-Million apart from other bookstores.

"We have a much better selection of magazines than you will find at most bookstores," he said.

Books-A-Million will also offer greeting cards, gifts and a collectables department, plus an array of bargain books, in addition to the nearly 50 categories of books that will fill the store.

Books-A-Million also offers a discount card allowing shoppers 10 percent off each time they visit the store up to a year from the date they purchase the card. The discount card costs $15.

Founded in 1917 in Florence, Ala., Books-A-Million is one of the nation's largest book retailers after Barnes and Noble and Borders. The chain operates over 200 stores in 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bookland stores and Joe Muggs Newsstands also operate under Books-A-Million.

With the store's opening, Draper says store officials are looking to become involved in the community, with hopes of Books-A-Million becoming "Aiken's bookstore."

Aiken's Bookstore? :  8/12/2008

Aiken already has a bookstore that offers 10% off, and you don't have to purchase any discount card to get it.
