A local writer/artist team is helping the Curiosity Shop celebrate its anniversary with a book signing Saturday.

Dr. Maggie Dorsey, R.N., and Lorenzo Williams will be signing copies of their children's book "My Hero, My Dad the Nurse" at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Curiosity Shop, located on the corner of Richland Avenue and Newberry Street. Dorsey is on the faculty at the USC Aiken School of Nursing and Williams, now an art teacher at Butler High School in Augusta, is a former Aiken resident.

"When we in town first opened the Aiken Center for the Arts, Lorenzo Williams was one of the first artists involved. He volunteered a lot there, and we got to know him through that," said Curiosity Shop co-owner John Heaton.

"My wife ran into him a couple of months ago - we haven't seen him in a few years, since he moved to Augusta - and he mentioned he'd illustrated this book on nursing with Dr. Dorsey. We're always looking for events to host, especially community-related things; nursing is an important profession, one that hasn't been limited to just females for years now, so we thought it was a good idea for a book and we wanted to support it," Heaton said.

The event is part of the Curiosity Shop's 10th anniversary celebration, according to Heaton. The store has been having weekly sales in honor of the anniversary throughout the summer - this week's special is on toys and novelty items -- and Heaton is planning a big celebration for the end of August, since the store's official opening in 1998 was in August.

The shop has had inquiries by phone about the book signing, Heaton said, crediting in-store promotion, a mailing on the event and the store's new website at www.curiosityshoptea.com for the interest.

"You know if you've got even a few phone calls, there are more people out there interested who haven't contacted us," he said.
