Plans are currently underway to widen Powderhouse Road.
Workers have recently begun doing the preliminary survey work along Powderhouse Road, between East Pine Log and Whiskey Road, according to Jeff Terry, the resident construction engineer for the South Carolina Department of Transportation. The surveying work is being done to determine the level of construction it will take for the road to be widened. "The project is in its very early stages," said Terry. "Right now workers are just doing topographic surveys."
Johnny Beam, chairman of the Aiken County Transportation Committee, said the committee has allocated funds from SCDOT for the work to expand Powderhouse Road.
"There is going to be some widening on that road," said Beam. "Traffic flow along Powderhouse is high." Beam said there have been some complaints about the level of traffic along the street, which is why the group decided to approve funding for the road expansion.
In March, the "C" committee, with the Aiken County Transportation Committee, recommended $750,000 be awarded to the project. Money has already been set aside for the project, and officials are now determining the level of work needed and if the funding currently allocated will be enough. The road's shoulders will likely be what is widened to give drivers more space, Beam said. Though the committee has signed off for the project and the initial work is being done, Beam said completion could take two years. "It generally takes a year or so to get to construction after a project is signed off," he said.
