Warrenville man held in sex case

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office arrested a 45-year-old Warrenville man on allegations he has been sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl since October 2007, according to a written release from the sheriff's office.

Phillip E. Jones of Wayland Street in Warrenville, is charged with two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and three counts of lewd act upon a minor.

He has been accused of sexually assaulting the teen at a home in Beech Island.

Investigators arrested Jones Wednesday afternoon after questioning at the sheriff's office.

He is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center.

MADD recognizes Officer of Year

Aiken resident and Public Safety Cpl. Chris Carter was recognized this year by Mothers Against Drunk Driving as the South Carolina Officer of the Year.

Carter, an eight-year veteran and now one of the City of Aiken's Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic officers, was awarded the distinction based on the number of drunken driving arrests, his involvement in DUI victim services, anti-underage drinking programs and his work ethic, said Sgt. Jake Mahoney, Carter's supervisor.

Carter was honored Wednesday at the MADD Enforcement Recognition Ceremony.

Wackenhut to host annual golf event

Wackenhut is hosting its 21st annual United Way Golf Tournament on Monday, Oct. 20 at Woodside Plantation Country Club in Aiken. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with a putting contest from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Lunch will be served from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and there will be a shotgun start at noon. The cost is $440 per foursome, with the entry fee donated to United Way. Wackenhut has previously raised more than $349,000 for United Way with these tournaments. The tournament will be captain's choice format, with a gross and net handicap division. There will be a putting contest and par 3 contest before the tournament starts, with on-course refreshments. Lunch and dinner will be provided.

Naval Junior ROTC to hold orientation

The Aiken High School Naval Junior ROTC unit will host a two-day orientation for all entering freshmen on Wednesday and Thursday.

The sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

The new cadets should report to the NJROTC classroom on the E-wing on the back parking lot.

The orientation will including fittings for new uniforms, said Cmr. Tony Negron. The unit's inspection with the Area 6 manager is scheduled Sept. 17, "which doesn't give us a lot of time," Negron said. "We want to get as many kids in uniform as possible."
