If you can only die once, "Death By Chocolate" is the way to go.

The Aiken County Public Library held a Death By Chocolate program for some adventurous young sweets fans Thursday afternoon. The program was part of the Young Adult Summer Reading Program.

For the first activity, the magic word was "squirrels," which appears in Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" an amazing number of times. The teens played chocolate musical chairs, walking around the chair circle while children's librarian Jennie Beck read passages from "Charlie."

"Every time I say the word, 'squirrels,' sit down," she instructed.

Players received small Hershey's bars as they were tagged out, and the winner received a Chocolate Emergency Kit in a decorative tin.

Guesses were required for the second activity; the teens guessed which of two tin foil boats in water pitchers would sink first from M&M cargo and how many M&M's it would take to sink it.

While the guesses were tallied, they divided into two teams for a relay race, then decorated whipped topping-frosted cupcakes with candy. The three winners of the boat guess had their choice of bags of candy as prizes.

The clock is ticking for Summer Reading Program participants to complete and turn in their reading logs before the Monday, Aug. 4 deadline. Readers age 5 and younger must complete 20 books, and ages 6 and older must read 10 books. Completers receive a certificate and a new book provided by Target.

The Summer Reading Program's activity schedule concludes next week with a modified version of the Splash Down party to be called Popsicles in the Park at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Aiken Woman's Club will be on hand to collect completed reading logs and give out prizes at the Popsicle party.
