A good time was had by all at this year's annual Cops & Lobsters benefit, and the athletes of the Special Olympics will undoubtedly benefit from the charitable donations given in their name.

Local law enforcement officers and local athletes helped raise more than $2,500 for the Special Olympic games at this year's annual Cops & Lobsters fundraiser.

Athletes and officers donated their time waiting tables at Aiken's Whiskey Road Red Lobster Restaurant, donating all the tips garnered to the international charity.

The event is one of several fundraising drives for the Special Olympics.

Held each year, the fundraisers are aimed at raising awareness and charitable contribution for the games.

But Cops & Lobsters is not the end of the road this year.

On Aug. 9, Charlie's Barber Shop, 2942 Whiskey Road, is hosting it's first benefit for the games.

From 9 a.m. to noon, the owner will donate 100 percent of the money raised from both the event to the games.

Cuts for Champions is a new event, but one welcomed by local law enforcement officers, who have supported the games for years.

In 1981, a Wichita, Kan., police chief began law enforcement's connection with the Special Olympics.

The law enforcement Torch Run quickly became synonymous with the games and the athletes.

Earlier this year, local officers from the Aiken area ran a torch from the Savannah River Site to the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center as part of a 10-plus mile run.

The money goes directly to the games, which were established in the early 1960s, initially beginning as a day camp for people with intellectual disabilities.

South Carolina has more than 15,500 athletes who train and compete in 22 Olympic-type sports.
