South Aiken High School student Nicole Neill has won the West Point Leadership award at her school, recognizing the faculty's choice as the best all-around junior.

Other area high schools will announce their school winners during awards ceremonies later this month.

The award is sponsored by the West Point Society of Columbia and the West Point Parent Club of South Carolina. The Leadership award honors academic performance, leadership, character, service and athletic achievement.

Neill, the daughter of Peggy and Charles Neill, is a Student Council officer, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society member and ranks in the top six percent of her class. She has played varsity soccer for three years and is active with the Salkehatchie Summer Service program and supports the Relay for Life and Make a Wish Foundation.

"I'm really surprised about this award," Neill said. "I enjoy school. I work hard, but it's a lot of fun."

Aiken High School teacher and Army Lt. Col. (ret.) Jim Saine has presented the Leadership award at South Aiken previous times, but was unable to participate earlier this week.

"West Point looks for 'the whole person' concept in its cadets," he said, "and the award is given to high school students who exhibit those same qualities."

Teachers Rachelle Mason and Kathleen Rogerson praised Neill for her leadership role at South Aiken.

"She is a student that goes the extra mile to not only see success, but also to enjoy it and continuously improve it," said Mason.

Neill works hard in the classroom and her grades reflect it, said Rogerson.

"She is able to manage her rigorous class load with A's and place varsity soccer and be a valuable member of Student Council," Rogerson said. "I love having her in class."
