More than 300 USC Aiken seniors celebrated their graduations Thursday and, in a real way, Lequisha Barber found the experience especially rewarding.

She has battled sickle cell anemia throughout her college career. Barber said firmly she wouldn't have marched without the support of sociology professors like Dr. Trudy Henson, Dr. Barbara Johnson and Dr. Douglas Kuck.

"My illness kept me out a lot each semester," Barber said. "But they made my experience the best, getting me through it so I could get my degree with just one extra semester."

As recently as February, she spent more than two weeks in the hospital. Barber was in a lot of pain, but her professors provided her with homework, and she was able to complete the make-up work during her hospital stay. She plans to attend Winthrop University for a master's in social work.

"My professors were so willing to work with me," Barber said. "I was very motivated to get my degree."

Chancellor Dr. Tom Hallman gave a formal goodbye to University of South Carolina President Dr. Andrew Sorensen, who will retire this summer. Hallman praised Sorensen's efforts in behalf of USC and the state - especially research funding, public/private partnerships, collaborations with Clemson and other colleges and the technical college system.

Sorensen in turn praised USCA's growth in the quality of students and with the addition of the Convocation Center, a second residential facility and a third on the way.

"It's been a wonderful time and it wouldn't have been possible without the Aiken City Council, Aiken County Council and the business community," Sorensen said.

Two prominent Aiken attorneys and civic leaders, Henderson Johnson Jr., and Frampton Wyman Toole Jr., were presented with honorary degrees.

Guest speaker Mark Emkes, the chairman and CEO of Bridgestone Firestone, told the graduates they have no control over inflation, exchange rates and the price of gasoline.

"But you do have control over values and integrity," said Emkes. "Do things right and success will follow. Show your integrity by giving back to the community."

Outstanding senior graduate Colby Moseley said the graduates faced and met challenges at USCA, with those skills and experiences make all of them better. Moseley urged them to lead and take risks. Success won't be coming without the willingness to go into unfamiliar territory, she said.

Two nursing graduates are doing just that. Hillary Metz has accepted an Army commission and will work at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. Carrie Madden will go into the Navy and expects to be assigned to a base in San Diego.

"It's just something I wanted to do and has helped me pay for college," Madden said.

Rebecca Wallace of North Augusta said she had some strong incentives to finish her sociology degree - daughters Nola, 8, and Bella, five months.

"They really motivated me, of course" Wallace said. "It's been really hard, but now I'll be able to take care of my family."

David Viar moved to Aiken with his family about 14 years ago. Staying home to attend USCA was an easy decision, he said.

"I love the town, and the college and the faculty here were great," he sad. "They make you feel right at home."

Another Aiken resident, Kaitlin Lindburg, attended USC for one year before transferring to USCA.

"It was definitely the right decision," the history major and Honors Program graduate said. "The faculty have been so helpful and give yo so much individual attention."

Lindburg is looking at graduate school and may wind up back at USC

"I'm older now, more experienced and more sure of myself," she said with a smile.
