A 55-year-old Croft Avenue man was jailed over the weekend after he reportedly punched an officer in the face two times and kicked another in the groin when he was being detained.

James D. Myers, 55, has been charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer and failure to comply with police.

The incident occurred on York Street around 5 a.m. Friday when an employee at a York Street convenience store noticed a "suspicious" man walking back and forth between the Sunoco and the BP Kangaroo Express convenience stores. She called the police.

The officer responding to the call spotted the man, who was wearing a latex glove on one hand, pacing in front of the Kangaroo Express. He was agitated and nervous, police said.

The man was ordered to stay in one place but would not. He refused, swore at the officer and then lunged at police, according to officials.

The man then reportedly kneed the officer in the groin area; he then "took the suspect to the ground," police said.

The man, however, would not give the officer his hands to be handcuffed and continued to struggle with the officer.

At that time, another officer tried to detain the man. Myers then reportedly punched her in the face two times.

The struggle continued until the police sprayed him with pepper spray.

Myers still fought with police, and he was sprayed with pepper spray a second time, police said.

Several other officers, including Aiken County Sheriff's Office deputies, responded to assist and eventually detained the man.

The suspect was then taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers for medical treatment and a psychiatric evaluation.

He was later released to the Aiken County detention center. His bond has been set at $21,097.50.
