Longtime Palmetto Federal and Regions Bank Executive Barry Adams has joined Security Federal Bank to work with commercial lending business development.

A native of Johnston, Adams has spent 35 years in the banking business.

"Regions Bank is a large bank and a good bank," he said. "I wanted the opportunity to be involved with a bank which has its primary interest in the market that Security Federal serves - here in Aiken and ranging from Columbia County to Columbia."

A native of Johnston, Adams graduated from Strom Thurmond High School and Georgia Southern University. He joined Palmetto Federal Savings and Loan Association - which later become PalFed - in 1974 as manager of the Johnston branch before transferring to the North Augusta branch four years later. He transferred to Aiken as head of deposit services 27 years ago.

Regions Bank bought PalFed about 12 years ago. Adams most recently served as the market president for the Aiken area four-county region.

He said he has been talking with Security Federal CEO Tim Simmons and couldn't pass up the chance to work with Simmons, bank president Chris Verenes and executive vice president Frank Thomas.

Adams is a quality banker and quality person who is well-respected in the area, Verenes said.

"We're very fortunate to have him," said Simmons. "Barry is a super person with a world of experience."

Adams calls Security Federal the perfect size in today's banking world.

"Their future is very bright," he said. "They have quality board members, and it's a terrific organization that to me has proved its character through its investment of time and money in the community."

Adams is active in the Aiken Rotary Club and serves as the Public Education Partners vice chairman.

He is on advisory boards with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Salvation Army, SCE&G in Aiken and the USC Aiken School of Business.

He also chairs the Paul Knox Education Endowment Fund in North Augusta.
