Fox Creek has a budding star in sophomore running back Jontae Herrin.
Already a breakout star in the Region Jamboree for the Predators, Herrin was responsible for the lone score for the home team in Aug. 22’s 48-6 loss to Dreher.
“I just tried to get my team back in it as quickly as I could,” he said. “It came a little bit too late, but we kept playing until the end.”
The sophomore racked up 64 yards on seven carries with the 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Herrin said he wants to be able to finish runs with more authority and break more tackles.
“I’m going to keep working to increase my speed and strength,” he said. “I got tackled a little bit too easy on some of the runs I had, I’ve got to break more tackles to score more. They (Dreher) were swarming the ball, wherever the ball was, that’s where they were.”
Mickey Derrick, first year offensive coordinator for the Predators, said he was impressed with Herrin from the beginning of camp, but was especially proud of his effort against Dreher.
“Jontae played a heck of a ballgame,” he said. “He has pretty good speed, and he showed he’s not afraid to mix it up with the guys. I was really happy to see that.”
The touchdown against Dreher, coupled with the two-touchdown effort in the Region Jamboree should give Herrin plenty of confidence going forward in the regular season, Derrick said.
“He ought to have a lot of confidence already, he’s been out here everyday working hard, and I can see where that confidence is building,” he said. “I know when he wasn’t playing much, he was in the huddle listening to calls, making sure he knew what to do. That made a big impression on me.”
In the next matchup for Fox Creek, Herrin is hoping his team can retain the paddle from Augusta Christian.
“I want a win. Nothing special, just a win,” he said. “I just try to keep the same routine every week and go hard every play.”
