A child has died after being struck by a golf cart in the parking lot of Aiken Regional Medical Centers on Monday.
The 3-year-old child from Graniteville was pronounced dead at Georgia Regents Medical Centerís Pediatric Unit at 6:52 a.m. today, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
Officers responded to a golf cart versus pedestrian collision that happened in the parking lot of the hospital at about 1:35 p.m. on Monday, according to Lt. Jake Mahoney, a spokesman for Aiken Public Safety. The child was struck in an area at the front of Aiken Regional by a golf cart driven by a hospital security employee. Carlton said the family was exiting the hospital toward the parking lot when the incident occurred.
The child was taken to Aiken Regionalís emergency room, and was later transported to Georgia Regents University, according to a press release.
No charges have been filed in the collision, and Mahoney said it was too early to speculate on possible charges. Aiken Public Safetyís collision reconstruction team will conduct an investigation, which could include speed determination, scale diagrams or collection of data for reconstruction, according to the release.
ďThe driver of the golf cart is cooperating fully with Aiken Public Safety,Ē Mahoney said on Monday.
The investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow morning in Newberry.
Aiken Regional released the following statement late Monday: ďAll of us here at the hospital are devastated by the accident that occurred this afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with this little girl and her family. The investigation is in the hands of Aiken Public Safety and they will be providing you with more details as they become available.Ē
