Man accused of setting wife on fire arrested in North Augusta

An Augusta man who allegedly doused his wife in gasoline and set her on fire was detained in Aiken County on Aug. 23, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.


Ronnie Lee Jones, 30, was seen on Buena Vista Avenue in North Augusta on Aug. 23 and later taken into custody without incident, according to Sgt. Shane McDaniel, a spokesman for the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities had received a tip that Jones might be in the area. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center with a hold on him for Richmond County.


Jones was wanted for aggravated assault after allegedly dousing his wife in gasoline and then setting her on fire, according to McDaniel. The incident happened on Aug. 22 at an automotive shop on 15th Street in Augusta, where Jones was residing.


According to jail records, Jones has two previous arrests in Aiken County, including one last month for assault and battery and burglary.
