A Williston woman who tried to shoplift several pairs of underwear from a store in the Aiken Mall allegedly had a bottle of cologne and makeup hidden in her genital area, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Carrie Ann Gainey, 31, of Williston Road in Williston, was charged with shoplifting-third or subsequent and resisting arrest. She was placed in the Aiken County detention center, where she remained on Monday afternoon.
Gainey tried to leave Belk in the Aiken Mall on Friday with a shopping cart and purse filled with merchandise that she reportedly didn’t pay for, according to an incident report. She resisted when officers tried to arrest her but was eventually taken into custody.
A loss prevention officer told police Gainey approached them and said, “Someone left used underwear in the dressing room,” the report stated. The employee believes Gainey removed her underwear in the dressing room and placed stolen underwear on to steal it, according to the report.
Officers searched Gainey and found a pair of underwear with the tags on in her pocket, police said. She could also be seen “in plain view” with two pairs of underwear “on her person.”
While being searched by female officers at the detention center, Gainey was seen taking tags off the allegedly stolen underwear while she removed them, police said. After the search, officers found that Gainey was wearing four pairs of underwear with the tags attached and three shirts that were identical but different colors.
They also found makeup that was “in the (genital) area of the suspect, and a ‘tester’ bottle of cologne,” the report stated.
The items Gainey was wearing could not be resold, police said. A pair of shoes that she had in her purse were taken back to the store.
Prior to the incident, Gainey allegedly tried multiple times to use a Belk credit card belonging to another woman; however, the card was declined at each register that she went to.
