Located at 612 West Buena Vista Ave. is a beautiful athletic field with bright green grass, stadium seating and iron gate fencing. Bordered by Sunset Hill Cemetery, Georgetown Apartments and residential homes, Lions Field remains an integral part of the City of North Augusta.

In 1952, the North Augusta Lions Club leased from the City a parcel of swamp-land and created a football and baseball field on Buena Vista Avenue. The field has been in active use since that day for a variety of sporting events.

Home to the powerhouse North Augusta High School football teams of the next decade, the teams reeled off a 42-game unbeaten streak and two state championships. The high school baseball field was also located there, and many fine teams and players represented the Yellow Jackets over the years, including Charlie Williams, Fuzzy Floyd and Allen Simmons.

Large crowds would watch the football games, reportedly more than 8,000 people at some contests. When the current North Augusta High School was built in the late 1960s, it was several years before the community raised private funds and built the football stadium for the school. Beginning in 1976, Yellow Jacket football has been played at the high school, and Lions Field has been the site of many community sports and recreation programs.

Current programs held at Lions Field include football and cheerleading for ages 7 to 12, youth soccer and T-ball baseball. Several local high schools use Lions Field as their home field, including Curtis Baptist, Fox Creek and the Home School Association. The facility has also been used for minor league football teams and is available for group outings. I can imagine corporate events, concerts, festivals and sports exhibitions such as lacrosse.
