ATLANTA — Playing in one of the earlier groups of the day, North Augusta native Matt NeSmith carded a 2-under 69 on Tuesday to advance to the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur with a two-day score of 1-over.


Playing the Highlands Course at Atlanta Athletic Club, NeSmith had a birdie and eight pars on the back nine before adding three birdies and two bogeys on the front.


The University of South Carolina junior will now face Sam Burns in match play. Burns, a class of 2015 LSU commit from Shreveport, Louisiana, is a two-time participant in the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley. The pair will tee of at 10:40 a.m.


After shooting a first-round 80, USC Aiken’s Andrew Ward turned in a 76 and missed the cut with a total score of 13-over.


Lee McCoy and Taylor Moore lead the way after two rounds of stroke play at 8-under, followed by Burns, Cheng-Tsung Pan, Jimmy Beck, Jonathan Garrick and Will Zalatoris at 5-under.
