David Snyder is about to turn his passion for working with small-business owners into a business itself.

Synder is inviting the public to an open house Thursday, Aug. 21, to showcase his Small Business Institute, which will offer programs, retreats and information for those who own a small business and need the help, or for individuals looking to start one and don't know where to begin.

The open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food and beverages will be catered by A Culinary Affair.

“I've been a CPA (certified public accountant) for more than 30 years, and I've worked with small businesses and individuals helping them to develop a better business model,” Snyder said. “I've also owned several small-business endeavors, and I just always was looking for a way to make them work better. A lot of people are certified in their specialty; they just don't have a strong business background, so I am trying to find ways to help them do that.”

Snyder received an accredited small-business certification six months ago, and that certification specifically gives him a way to specialize in educating individuals about small-business practices.

The Small Business Institute offers advice, consultations, seminars and retreats for a reasonable cost, Synder said.

“I speak on a wide variety of topics from buying a business, starting a business or even selling a business,” Snyder said. “I also deal with human resources, personnel issues, financial management, operations and strategic planning once someone is running a business.”

Depending on the program in which owners and individuals wish to participate, costs can start at anywhere from $5 to $95 or more.

But Synder said whether individuals want a face-to-face consultation or to participate in a retreat, costs will be affordable; he developed varied price points so anyone can get a little piece of his advice.

“When I was working as a CPA, I was working with a lot of the upper-end businesses, but also knew the lower-end were the ones needing help,” Snyder said. “I just want to educate small-business owners on better business practices so they can run more efficiently, more effectively and become more profitable.”

The Small Business Institute is located at 142 Pendleton St. N.W. in the same building as Hatcher Law Firm.
