An Aiken man awoke early Friday to find his SUV on fire, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened at about 1:50 a.m. Friday at a home on Medwell Hill Road, according to a sheriff’s report. The 30-year-old victim said he awoke to a very bright light outside, which he discovered was his 2003 Mercury Mountaineer SUV on fire.

The victim said he saw the driver’s door open about halfway when the flames started to flare, police said. He told officers he usually leaves the vehicle unlocked. The New Ellenton Fire Department responded to the blaze and asked the Sheriff’s Office to investigate, due to the suspicious nature of the fire.
