For the first time in Aiken County, the 2014 South Carolina INT League Championships will be held at Langley Pond this weekend.

The League supports waterskiing, wake boarding, kneeboarding and wakeskating competitions.

The Olympic-sized course at the pond is generally known for the annual Augusta Invitational Rowing Regatta and triathlon.

This year, the Aiken County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department expanded its water competition reach.

Roughly 60 competitors of all ages will touch down in Aiken on Saturday and Sunday.

Individuals can bring chairs, blankets and picnic baskets to watch individuals compete in slalom and wakeboarding events from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Mike Blakley, South Carolina INT League state coordinator, took over the position last year and said one thing he wanted to do for the boarders and skiers was move them around to new locations.

“I had heard about Aiken’s Langley Pond, and we were actually in discussions last year about it,” Blakley said. “It takes about a year to prepare for events like this, so it worked out really well where we could have it in Aiken this year.”

The INT League, which started in 1993, is the primary sponsor of the event, alongside the Aiken County Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The league was started in Washington state, and has now spread into 27 states hosting more than 250 events per year, according to its website.

“We carry a wide range of ages of both young and older,” Blakley said. “This weekend, anyone can come out and enjoy watching amateurs and some professionals, too.”

Mark van der Linden, Aiken County’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism director, said the staff is really excited to take on the new event locally.

“This is the first time Aiken County PRT has hosted a water sports event of this caliber, and we are proud to host such a unique event for the area,” van der Linden said. “This is the first of many new events and programs at Langley Pond Park.”

The event is open to the public and free to attend. Concessions will be available.

Langley Pond is located at 113 Langley Dam Road in Burnettown.
