A man was safely arrested after dousing his body with a flammable chemical and threatening to harm himself Tuesday night.
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a domestic disturbance at about 11:30 p.m., and police ended up spending nearly two hours negotiating with a man threatening to commit suicide.
According to Sheriff’s Office Capt. Eric Abdullah, the man went to the home of his estranged wife on Piper Road and demanded to see their children, which led to an argument.
The woman called 911, and the initial responding units got on scene at 11:52, Abdullah said.
The family was escorted out of the home through the back door.
The man proceeded to barricade himself in the home, cover himself with “some sort of flammable chemical” and threatened suicide, Abdullah said.
The SWAT team was called to the scene, and the man later surrendered at 2:11 a.m.
The man is receiving a mental evaluation, and the main goal now is to make sure that he’s OK, Abdullah said.
No charges have been made at this time.
