Aiken Public Safety and South Carolina Law Enforcement are currently investigating a suspicious package found at Kroger on Whiskey Road.

Lieutenant Karl Odenthal is on the scene and said the incident began as a breach of trust call that occurred around 8 a.m.

“The call originated as a breach of trust vehicle. Officers got behind it and stopped the driver and ended up finding the package that looked suspicious,” Odenthal told the Aiken Standard.

Odenthal added that as a matter of protocol, Public Safety contacted SLED to assist with the rest of the investigation.

“It’s not unusual for us to get these calls but you never know what you’re going to have. So just as a matter of safety, we want to have the right people in place and take the right steps,” he said.

A large portion of the Kroger parking lot is currently barricaded off, but Odenthal said the store is still open for business.

The Aiken Standard will have more information as the situation develops.
