Maya Galvan is one of 16 students nationally to receive a Global Citizen Scholarships for Underclassmen from the National Spanish Examination, a division of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. To be eligible, Galvan received medal placement by scoring at or above the 75th-percentile on the 2013 National Spanish Examination. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition for a two-week Spanish immersion program through Concordia Language Villages, which Galvan will attend in July. Galvan is the daughter of Robyn Reilly of Aken and George Galvin of Aiken, and a student at Augusta Preparatory Day School.

By attending El Lago del Bosque, the Spanish Language Village of Concordia Language Villages near Bemidji, Minn., Galvan will experience a simulated visit to the Spanish-speaking world, and will be immersed in the Spanish language and culture through large and small learning groups, authentic foods, holiday celebrations, songs, dances, crafts, games and everyday conversations. By interacting with peers and staff from around the world, Galvan will also learn about the many opportunities available to those who speak more than one language.
